Omaruru means 'bitter milk' in Otjiherero language, as the cattle used to browse on a local bush that turned their milk bitter.

Things to do and places to visit in and around Omaruru

Erongo Mountains - Climbing

In these mountains are great rock climbs, both sport and trad climbs. You can ask a committee member from the MCSA Namibia section for a climbing route guide in this region.

Spitzkoppe were voted, by CNN Travel, as one of 26 top places to see in the world. There are also absolutely spectacular world class sport and trad climbs! There are various camp spots. For rock climbers drive on to the very last camp spots (for shade during the day and climbing just around the corner of your camp spot). Unfortunately the camping is a bit expensive especially taking into account the lack of bathroom facilities.
Beware! If you are planning on climbing the normal route you might (depending on the fitness levels of your partners) hike up to the start of this great climb for a hole 6 hours, climb up and abseil down for 6 hours and hike back in the dark for another 6 hours! It will still be worth it!
